History of Clan Keith Society, Canada

In October 1998 Eleanor Lane of Guelph, Ontario contacted the Clan Keith Society, USA after seeing it's listing in the Scottish Banner, to inquire about membership. Alice Hattenbrün, then national secretary of the American society for Clan Keith encouraged Eleanor to consider establishing a Canadian society.  With the assistance of Alice Hattenbrün and Darrell Keith, Lieutenant to the Chief for Clan Keith USA, Eleanor and her daughter Deborah MacDonald took the first step towards launching Clan Keith Society in Canada in August 1999.  Setting up a Clan Keith Society information tent at the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Fergus, Eleanor and Deborah were able to gather support for the idea of a Canadian society for Clan Keith. By early fall they had identified a core group of individuals willing to undertake the task of creating and building the Clan Keith Society, Canada.

In November 1999 the inaugural meeting for the Clan Keith Society, Canada was held at Guelph at which time a board of directors was constituted, with Deborah MacDonald as president and Eleanor Lane as secretary.  The following June, members of the board of directors attended the Glasgow Highland Games in Glasgow, Kentucky to meet with the Chief of Clan Keith, Michael Keith, the 13th Earl of Kintore and his wife Lady Mary the Countess of Kintore.  At this highland gathering the Earl of Kintore formally granted recognition to the Clan Keith Society, Canada.

During the summer of 2002, members of Clan Keith Canada travelled to Scotland to attend the international gathering of Clan Keith at the Aboyne Highland Games in Aberdeenshire. During this gathering a cairn was dedicated at Keith Hall marking 1000 years of Keith Clan History. The 13th Earl of Kintore through subscription from clan members worldwide had erected the cairn.

In 2004 Clan Keith Society, Canada marked its 5th anniversary with a visit from the Chief from Clan Keith, the l3th Earl of Kintore.  Clan Keith was one of the featured clans at the 59th Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games and Lord Kintore was an honoured guest at the games. Many members of Clan Keith USA travelled north to join in the celebrations and help mark the occasion.

The following summer, members of Clan Keith Canada journeyed south to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in Boone, North Carolina. The occasion this time was to greet James Keith, the 14th Earl of Kintore, on his first official visit to North America as Chief of Clan Keith. His fiancée, Carrie Paxton, his mother Lady Kintore, and his sister Lady Iona accompanied Lord Kintore.
